Everyone has heard the story of Helen Keller. She was blind, deaf, and mute and achieved quite a bit in her dark and silent "life". She was the first blind-deaf person to "earn" a Bachelor of Arts degree, went on tours "speaking" to people from all over, "wrote" many books, and raised money for the blind [1], among many other things.
Personally, I think the whole thing is a bunch of crap.
Helen Keller was born June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama [2] and was as healthy as any child. It wasn't until she hit 19 months that karma bit her in the ass before she could unleash her evil lies to the world. She developed a fever that left her blind and deaf, something she would never recover from. (lolz) At age seven a tutor, Anne Sullivan, was hired to assist with Helen's schooling. Anne helped Helen learn many new things in her lifetime, some good and some bad.
At age 10, Helen started her life of deceit. She caught the attention of a man named Michael Anagnos. He found her to be an amazing person due to her ability to read and write even with her disability. He wrote articles about her (presumably to exploit her), making her quite well-known. In 1891, the sightless bitch tried to pull one over on Mr. Anagnos. She sent him a story she "wrote" as a gift. As it turns out, this story was stolen from one she was told previously. Though she claims to not recall this story being told to her, I'm going to guess that she thought her disabilities would save her from ridicule. Wrong. [3]
Years went by and eventually she "earned" that degree, became a political activist, and did a whole bunch of other stuff that is either made up or exaggerated. After hearing about her failed attempt at getting away with plagiarism, I really don't feel that I need to go on researching her anymore to prove my point: her life is a bunch of lies.
It would seem as though her innocent life took a detour when that Sullivan woman came around. Sure, Helen may have done many things that people and books claim she has done but that one mistake really made me think of her differently. If you really take the time to look into everything that she did throughout her life, it would seem as though there are things that just seem too far-fetched to be true.
The way I see it, the "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" proverb was put to use here. A young girl was taken advantage of (in a non-pedophiliac way... that we know of) and an attempt was made to portray her as someone who was innocent, pure, and striving to overcome her disabilities. In reality, it would seem that she took advantage of the situation and tried to capitalize on it (with the help of Anne Sullivan and others around her).
Final Thoughts: If Helen Keller fell down in the woods, would she make a sound?
